Light industry

When I was a youngster living in the Blue Mountains and traveling down to the big smoke on the train, it was always a highlight of the journey to pass the Ausscrap sign right near the tracks. Aus Crap. Heh heh. It provided unfailing amusement, and also signaled the nearing end of the two-hour trip.

Now I live a stone's throw from Ausscrap and I often overhear passers-by amuse themselves with the unfortunate name. Aus Crap. Heh heh. Amazing that they haven't changed it by now.

But more amazing than that is Aus Crap is still an operating scrap yard, taking up a huge amount of prime real estate begging to be converted into trendy, industrial-themed apartments.

Today I managed to take a squiz at what goes on inside behind the barbed wire enclosed compound, which is usually infuriatingly closed up. Funnily enough, the name is actually quite fitting. Lots of crap. Turned into cubes of crap by cool-looking machines.

I can just imagine these Crap Cubes being used as an edgy sculptural element in the apartment building sure to be here one day, in what the real estate agents will refer to as an ' echo of inspiration' from the site's past.

I'd actually like to have one of those crap cubes in my garden. Better still, they could offer a service where you give them the crap and they make a cube out it! Your own personal crap cube!

Well I reckon 'crap cubes' could be covered in a resin, and would make a great garden stool. Ha!
Newtown is just so edgy...

I was actually thinking about this last night. Whenever I see those big letters I read it as AUS CRAP first, and have to think about the fact that more emphasis should be on the S. Terrible name. Can you imagine answering the phone? "Good morning, Asucrap, can I help you?".

I know! The joke must wear pretty thin for them.

Just stumbled across your wonderful blog whilst Googling Aus Crap, hahaha. Sad to see that you appear to have long left the blog...?
